Drugs/Medicines Consumption during Pregnancy and Congenital Anomalies



The most well documented drugs with negative effect on pregnnacy are:

1.Antibiotics: Streptomycin,Tetracyclin,Chloramphenicol,Sulphonamides,Aminoglucosides.
Effects of this drugs on pregnancy:
-nerve deafness
-dental disclouration
-gray syndrome
-jaundice and kernicterum
-nephrotoxic.

2.Hormones: Diethylstilboestrol,Androgens,Contraceptive pill.
Effects of ormones drugs on pregnancy:
-vaginal adenosis
-virilization of female foetus
-VACTREL syndrome=vertebral,anorectal,cardiac,tracheal,renal,esophagial and lymb abnormalies

3.Oral Anticoagulant : Coumarins,etc.
Effects of anticoagulants on pregnancy:
-chondrodisplasia punctata=saddle nose,frontal possing,mental retardation,cataract
-foetal hemorrhage.

4.Cytotoxic drugs cause abortion and multiple anomalies.

5.Antithyroid drugs consumtion during pregnancy cause goiter and mental retardation.

6.Salycilate medicines cause foetal hemorrhage.

7.Antihistaminics,Antiepileptics and oral hypoglicemic may be teratogenic.
